Environmental Crisis and Culture:
An Introduction to Ecocriticism and a Public Discussion
Ecocriticism Research Collective
As
Greg Garrard outlines in Ecocriticism: The New Critical Idiom (2012),
discussions about climate change must go beyond the natural sciences to
include attention to cultural production. From novels to films and
children's picture books, the world abounds in depictions and
representations of humans and nature. Such texts inherently reflect and
may inform how we think about our relationship to the natural world as
individuals and a species. In this way, the literary and cultural
imagination are valuable sites in need of critical attention.
To this end, Ecocriticism is a flourishing field of literary and cultural studies which examines the relationship between nature and the cultural imagination. As the Ecocriticism Research Collective at the Institute of English and American Studies, we would like to briefly share our work on various inflections of this field and pose questions for public engagement. Our aim is to spotlight the relevance of an attentive and critical eye towards the cultural products we consume and engage with daily, realizing how they may shape personal attitudes, conceptions, and ideas about the natural world, environmental crises, and ourselves.
